I found this neat link to old tourist attractions in Florida. Most were not in Miami, but anyone living in Florida since the mid-eighties will at least recognize a few of them.

I remember going to Circus World, Masterpiece Gardens, Fred Bear Museum and the wax museum in Miami. At least Bass Pro Shops bought up Fred Bear's stuff to put on display in their stores.

Remember Pirates World? That place was wonderful. Lion Country Safari? And we went north to something called Six Gun Territory. Forget exactly where it was, but it was like an old western frontier town, with train robbers etc.
Lion Country Safari is still there!
Six gun territory was in or near Ocala - used to go to it when I went to sleep away camp.
So great to read about the places I knew as a kid. I lived in the apartments on San Ignacio, moved to Monza in junior high and then San Remo. Worked at L. Reed & co. on Red Road in high school. La Glacé bakery Lindy’s restaurant , Joe’s News Nelson’s Drugs across the street from Sunset Drugs. Got my hair cut at Hugo’s on Sunset as a little kid , drooled over clothes at Judi Leslie (Ladybug and Villager) and bought tiny glass animals at the gift shop across the street from Sunset 5&10. The little candy place on the corner across from Cocoplum was called 5 Bells. They sold 2cent small bottles of grape soda called PeeWees. Mr Marks for 4th grade and Mr Needham (way ahead of his time) for 5th. His friend Mr Vasquez came in and called him outside to tell him President Kennedy had been shot. Mr Needham came in and had us stand up beside our desks and then he told us about the President. The P.A. System broadcast the WTVJ news special report. Then we were sent home early. Tahiti Beach and riding bikes on Old Cutler. Stevens grocery store across Dixie Hwy used to have a carnival in the parking lot sometimes. Princely’s dress shop and Krell’s shoes. Sunset Cafeteria. The poet Robert Frost came and spoke at Sunset Elementary. I think he had a home near the school. The Sinclair gas station on the corner of Red Rd and San Remo with a dinosaur on the sign. Speaking of dinosaurs… I’m signing off. Hope this sparked some good memories.
