A Standing Offer

I thought it might be nice to offer, for those of you who don't live here anymore, pictures of specific places you might remember or may be curious about.  Maybe your old house, your school or a park you remember...just leave me your request in a comment here and I'll do my best to oblige!

MetroZoo was actually just renamed "Zoo Miami"..ugh, I hate it. May tak me a while to gets pics from there as I'm not in a big hurry to go, especially in the summer. But, I think I'll go over to the old Parrot Jungle (aka Pinecrest Gardens)tomorrow and take some pictures for you!

There was a park on US1, not as far down as the goony golf place...maybe around SW 132 St or so? It had an athletic field but the main attraction for us was the play area. It had a rocket ship that you could climb up in and the slide down. We always called it "The Rocket Park" but it may have been Sunniland Park? It was farther south than the shopping center and on the left side as you headed south.

And speaking of Sunniland Shopping Center, is Senn's 5&10 still there? I tried Google maps but it wasn't working properly here at the office (where I should be working instead of posting OL).

THANKS SWAMPANGEL. You really are an angel to run around taking pics in the heat!

Hey ghostwriter! Senn's is long gone (as well as Red Ballon. Remember that place???) The park you're thinking of is Suniland Park. I will post a bit about it later today and try to get some new pictures of it.

OMG yes, Red Balloon, Eagel Army Navy, Syper X, those were on the Publix end of the Center.

Senns, Rexall, The Flame, JoAnn Fabrics, Umm...oh yeah the pet store! Remember the old lady who ran it? She was so mean. She always cast such suspicious eyes when ever you bought a turtle or something. Like she didn't REALLY want to sell it to you. There was a wig shop, and Pizza Place and more that I can't remember. There was a wishing well in front of The Flame..and waaay back before the 33156 post office was moved there, they had pony rides. I liked riding Freckles the best. And then they moved down to where the theater was finally built, and then somewhere further down US1..And the theater had the air raid siren that went off every Saturday at 12 noon (or was it 1 pm?)

OK I really gotta get back to work. I'm starting a blog and would like to link to yours...as soon as I can find the time to get it going I mean. Reading the stuff here and the links has inspired me. That plus old age and rampant nostalgia. ;)

Hi there. Just bumped into this while looking up some other things. By any chance, do you remember a GIANT slide somewhere in Miami--think it was called Aladdin's Land. I believe it was right on I-95 (or maybe 826?). This was in the 60s. Photos? Hopefully you, or somebody else reading remembers. Thnx!

Hmmm...I don't remember it, but maybe someone else does!

I remember the giant slide, you rode down it on a burlap sack. It was great...1967 or so? And I seem to remember it was on US1. Seems to me it wasn't there very long, maybe a year or two.

Do they still have the Youth fair every year? Ahhhh the memories....

PS I seem to remember batting cages on the same site as the slide. And I think it was (heading north on US1) past Dadeland, towards S Miami on the left hand side of the highway, but before the CG firestation and that ice place.

Just found this site. Very strange. You guys are describing my childhood. Ghostwriter33156. I remember that lady being mean at the pet store too! I loved Red Balloon were I bought my Barbie dolls. Senn's 5&10, love that place!!!! I can still remember picking out my Halloween costumes there. We lived just around the corner from the shopping center in the mid 60's-78. I was 13 when we moved. We ate at the Flame and that Pizza place. We use to go to Carvel ice cream too, i'm sure you remebmer that. My mother shopped at the fabric store, hated it it always smelled so bad of the fabric. I have photos of me on those pony rides. I played on the rocket at the park. So nice to read something from "home". Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one with those memories. So nice to know "there's more of us out there"!

missMiami..omg i remember that fabric store and my eyes burning so bad while my mother shopped. And yes I remember Carvel. Seems like my whole early childhood revolved around that shopping center. My mom won me a Pebbles doll at Grand Union. There was a coral rock house a couple blocks away that was torn down to build a boring bland house. Seems to me there were a couple of those coral rock houses near Sunniland. All gone now. Even the coral rock walls built on our neighbor's property on 67 ave was removed. It was built by some Bahamians. No mortar..all fit together by cutting the rock by hand. Sad really.

An Old Ridge Rat.......
I remember the in ground trampolines at the Cutler Ridge Mall parking lot; what a blast.
Also, the old Richmond Blimp base before the Miami Zoo moved there from Key Biscayne.
Sure do miss being home.
