God Did you bring back some memories for me. I was born in 1969 in Miami. I was just looking at your Blog's. Lum's....Man has it been years since Ive seen a picture of that place. There used to be a White Castle down near the area of Dolphin Stadium. Of course that use to all sand dunes so long ago. My brother and I use to sneak behind the horse track Calder and watch the races up against the track. I looked up Skipper Chuck the other day on the net. I used to watch that show before school too along with Batman. There was also a pizza place down near North Miami Beach that played the 3 Stooges on a large screen while you ate. Everything you talked about brought back so many memories for me. Thanks. Im visiting Miami Sequarium in my mind right now. you know they use to be the home of FLIPPER. I couldnt wait to go see him on the weekend sometimes. The old Crandon Park Zoo was great also. Thanks again for the memories.

Hello, old denizens of Miami and Miami Beach. I'm a native Floridian, born at Jackson Memorial in December 1949 (I was the only one in my class--everyone else was from "somewhere else"). Lived most of my childhood on the Beach, in my grandparents' broken down, rickety old apartment building which once stood at 8th street and West avenue, just across from the Fleetwood Hotel (it's been gone for 50 years, but still resides in my mind's eye). Anyway, now, I need YOUR help. I've acquired an old Miami Marlins baseball jersey. Call me a nostalgist, but when I won it at an auction in upstate New York, it brought tears to my eyes. Anyway, it's circa 1955-1959 (the auctioneer claims 1957). So, what I need to know is who wore #20 for the Marlins back then. I know it wasn't the great Satchel Paige's jersey, since he wore #26 (I think). If anyone has an old roster, or a keen memory, I'd love to know whose jersey I have displayed on my wall. Thanks, Rick

Thanks, Angel. It would really be cool to know. By the way, I just want corroboration on this, since I've suggested to people who know White Castle that our Royal Castle was better. In fact, it was a LOT better, although I admit similar. Forget the great 12 oz. schooner of birch beer you got at Royal vs. White. Forget the disgust at mindlessly running your hands along the underside of the counter only to be grossed out at the touch of hundreds of wads of dried gum...yuch, I can still feel it. By the way, Royal Castles in the late 50s and early 60s were far more disgusting than they were in the 70s. One day I got a soft wad...horrific. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't needed that hand in a few seconds to eat with. Anyway, forget all that. The primary difference was certainly the birch beer, but second to that was that the aroma of the steam-grilling onions was far more perfumed than the same process yields in White Castles. I don't know why, since the processes were nearly identical. Just a different brand of poison that one becomes addicted to in the course of a lifetime. Fortunately, with the demise of Royal Castle, I discontinued my addiction for those tiny hamburgers, so that I can usually successfully pass a White Castle without getting sucked in.

Well, I tried my hardest to find out about your jersey and who wore that number, but nada..zip...nothing. I'm sorry.

Royal Castle was definitely better that White Castle! We still have one left down here and it is on my list of things to do, to go there and grab a bite and reminisce. Only down side, it's in a kind of scary part of town!
